It’s a dog’s life around here, full or romping and playing, long walks and belly rubs.  I’m a really happy pooch and I love my family immensely.  We’ve been together since forever and have seen so many things through the years.  I thought we had seen everything and then it happened.

My life has changed, dramatically. I was for many many years a one family dog, living in a big beautiful home in the Russell Estates area of Plano (Mom and Dad said that a lot towards the end, but I’ll explain that later) with an even bigger beautiful yard. My job was to guard the family, the home and yard.  It didn’t stop there though because we cared (still do) about the neighborhood so we took special pride in making sure it was safe and looked great!  I’ve done my job with pride since I was born and other neighborhood dogs looked to me as the standard for how a faithful dog should behave.  

I loved the job I had in my family, just the same way I love my family. We’ve grown over the years starting out with just four of us and now, well there’s just too many to count! I call the little ones my pups because being a career dog I chose not to have pups of my own.

Yes, our life was happy.  I worked as the neighborhood’s lead watchdog until a few years ago when everything turned on a dime.  It started one day when something in the air changed in our home. I could smell it. There was a kind of excitement, a static that tickled my very sensitive snout.  People full of strange scents started walking through our home and it was around this time that Mom and Dad started saying that our home was ‘nestled in Russell Estates’.  Then Mom and Dad started going through all the things in our home – some of the things they sold, some they donated and the rest they put in boxes and then one day, into a truck.

Then we left our home one last time –

I was so confused…and a little bit afraid.  We drove to our new place.  This new place is full of excitement and even before we parked, my nose new that we visited regularly.  All those familiar smells were everywhere here. These were good smells, GREAT smells, of yummy foods and of the many other dogs, all excited and having fun while they’re here. This is a place full of treats and walks and Mom and Dad are always happy here.

Fast forward a few months and I have to say living here is a doggy dream! My bed, favorite toys, and my bowls are in their new spots in our new home and right next to the front door, is, my leash. I checked the new place out from top to bottom, committing each new smell to memory, feeling like a young pup, starting a new adventure.

There are plenty of new places to visit and as I get used to them, I help the other dogs with advice on how to make the most of their visits. I know which stores offer pet items, which restaurants always have nice cold bowls of water set out for dogs to enjoy, and where the best animal accessories can be brought.   There are some restaurants with patios where dogs can dine with our people.

What a great life here! The other dogs have started referring to me as Mayor Kayli because I’m here all the time and I know so much.  I’m just going to roll with it because I love to help give advice. I’m proud to say I’ve helped quite a few dogs avoid the water bowls in front of restaurants that I know they don’t change it often enough and let get warm.

That’s unacceptable to us dogs. We like our water fresh and cold, not warm and slimy and as mayor I intent to patrol the area and make sure the water is cool and refreshing for all the visiting pups.

Yes, it’s an important job, mayor, and while I never thought I would be going into a second career at the age of 17, a time when most pooches retire to sleeping 18 hours a day and barking at things that aren’t there, I’m dedicated to being the best mayor I can and to prove –
