Plano is an incredible city is so many ways. It is moving forward to the future on such a fast level and yet it still remains a hometown with a community feel, which is probably one of the reasons it’s continually voted one of the best places to live in America. Part of that hometown goodness comes from our schools, and for that, we have to thank – our teachers. Our post today is in honor of those teachers and a tool that has been developed to help them called the CORE Store.
The CORE Store was founded in fall of 2017 as an initiative of the Plano ISD Education Foundation, it was set up to provide educators with an assortment of materials they can use in the classroom to help them deliver the best education possible to their students. It is stocked with teaching resources that have been donated by businesses, organizations, and individuals in the local area.
The store allows teachers to shop for additional school supplies for their students at no cost. Across the district 16,164 students (about 32%) qualify for free or reduced cost meals, with some campuses reaching as high as 90%. For these campuses, school supplies and classroom materials represent a day-to-day struggle for many students.
There was a real need
Following a survey of over 1500 Plano ISD teachers, the CORE Store was developed with two goals in mind:
- Assist our teachers in providing the needed supplies for their students at no charge.
- Ensure all students have the supplies necessary to help them focus on learning.
She explained to us that the research also found that our teachers in Plano were spending anywhere from $250 to over $2,000 of their own money to buy school supplies for students in need. In addition, we all know that students learn better when they all have the same school supplies available in the classroom.
The mission of the CORE Store is to help students succeed by equipping teachers with donated classroom resources, providing an opportunity for every Plano ISD student to have the supplies required for success in school.
The Success Continues
In the year and half they have been open, they have served 93% of our schools including 100% of our Title I schools being served. The CORE Store has donated to our teachers and ultimately to students over $233,076 in supplies. In addition, over 1,400 teachers have ‘shopped’ at the Core Store and filled their carts with supplies at no charge for students in their classrooms, enabling CORE Store to reach over 44,000 students. .
When they first surveyed teachers in 2015 to research the viability of opening the CORE Store, one teachers said many times that she felt caught between a rock and a hard place as a single parent that had to make the difficult decision of whether or not to pay for her children’s dental care or buy school supplies for the children in need in her classroom. The Plano ISD Education Foundation never wants any of teacher to be put in such a position and this is where the CORE Store makes a difference for teachers and students.
